Advanced US labs could start developing Ebola treatments

World Today

Researchers in the United States are trying to help curb the Ebola virus at three advanced labs that could start developing treatments if they are given permission.

It has been difficult to attract investment for prevention and treatment of Ebola because the disease is so rare. However, the massive outbreak in West Africa has fueled the necessity to quickly develop a vaccine.

Experts say the testing and manufacturing of new vaccines is heavily dependent on technology and training. Such resources are available at labs in the U.S.

Although the drugs produced at such labs are usually meant for American use, they can be provided to other countries if it is in the interest of national security.
