A top Shiite cleric in Iraq has voiced support for the prime minister designate, Haider al-Abadi, following incumbent Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki ending his bid to retain power.

Al-Maliki, who has been prime minister since 2006, made the announcement of his resignation late Thursday and threw his support behind al-Abadi, a fellow member of his Shiite Islamic Dawa Party. Associated Press Bureau Chief Vivian Salama reports from Baghdad.
