Panama Canal turns 100 amid setbacks to its expansion

Global Business

The Panama Canal is celebrating a century in operation.

One hundred years ago, this man-made marvel revolutionized international shipping. And another expansion should be completed by 2015.

CCTV’s Nitza Soledad Perez recently hitched a ride across this 77-kilometer expansion.

The world’s biggest container shipping company is Maersk Line. Last year the Danish company scaled back operations in the canal, in favor of other routes. The company operates 600 ships that moves 3 million containers years.

CCTV America spoke to Robbert Jan van Trooijen, Chief Executive of Maersk Latin America, to understand what impact the expansion of the canal will have on his business.
