It is one of the world’s most recognizable hats, the Panama Hat. But what the world may not know is that these hats are not made in Panama, but in Ecuador.

They are an icon of Ecuadorian craftsmanship and tradition and have been produced in Ecuador for centuries. The straw hat got the name “Panama Hat” because it was sold to the Peninsula of Panama in the 18th Century.

U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt made the hats famous when he wore one during the construction of the Panama Canal.
