UN resolution may help end Iraq crisis

World Today

The U.N. Security Council resolved to limit funds and support for the Islamic State and al-Nusra militant groups to help end the violence in Iraq and Syria.

UNSC members said they will not stand for the continuation of IS and al-Nusra violence. The vote to end funding and recruiting of foreign fighters in Iraq and Syria was unanimous.

Council members also expressed readiness to impose sanctions on other individuals involved in financing or facilitating the travel of foreign fighters.

The resolution is a response to the extremist ideology and actions that have created instability and security issues in the region, as well as displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians.

The resolution calls for the U.N. Sanctions Committee to provide an assessment within 90 days of the threat posed by IS and al-Nusra.
