‘Anti-antibiotic’ era could start as early as 2020

World Today

Abuse of antibiotics has been affecting the treatment of many health-related issues, particularly in India where they can be purchased off the shelf.

Recent studies point to India as the country with the highest resistance to new drugs, partly due to rampant use of antibiotics for common ailments.

Researchers say the problem is so acute that if action is not taken now, it will take only five to eight years for antibiotics to stop working.

According to scientists, an “anti-antibiotic” era could start as early as 2020. This means that anyone with basic health issues, such as a cough or even viral fever, could not be treated with antibiotics. In case of more serious issues like a liver or kidney transplant, it would take much longer to recover.
