Thousands gather for funeral of Brazilian presidential candidate Eduardo Campos

World Today

More than 100,000 people attended the funeral of Eduardo Campos, the Brazilian presidential candidate who was killed in a plane crash last week.

Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff and her predecessor, Luiz Inacio ‘Lula’ da Silva, were among those who attended. Campos was to stand against President Rousseff in the election coming in October. Brazil’s Socialist Party will formally announce next week that Campos’ former running mate marina Silva will take his place as presidential candidate.

An investigation continued over what caused the plane crash. Campos’ private jet crashed after an aborted landing attempt due to bad weather in the city of Santos. Officials from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board are also in Brazil to help officials establish what happened.

CCTV America’s Stephen Gibbs reports.
