Chinese President Xi Jinping makes first visit to Mongolia

World Today

It is the first visit to Mongolia by a Chinese president in more than 10 years. This is also the first visit to Ulaanbaatar for President Xi Jinping since he became the president. CCTV America’s Roee Ruttenberg reports.

When Xi was last in Ulaanbaatar six years ago (before he was president), trade between the two countries stood at $2 billion. Now it’s three times as much. If this visit goes well, it’s only expected to grow.

President Xi and his delegation got to work and signed a number of deals. These deals include additional access to Chinese ports for Mongolian goods, the development of a free-trade zone, the training in China of Mongolian engineers, and additional investment in Mongolia’s infrastructure, particularly its mining sector. China has called this a win-win approach.

For China, it means a continued supply of resources while strengthening Mongolia’s economy.
