Thousands of mourners marched during the funeral, firing weapons into the air in anger and calling for revenge.

Palestinian officials reported 22 people killed in Gaza on Thursday.

Since midnight Wednesday, 55 rockets fired into Israel from Gaza. Eight of them have been shot down and the rest fell into open areas. The military wing of Hamas announced it has fired a missile at Ben Gurion Airport. The airport is functioning as normal, despite Hamas threats to target it.

Salah Arouri, who is based in Turkey and is considered a primary figure within Hamas, boasted Wednesday during a conference in Istanbul that the group’s military wing was behind the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank in June. The defense minister requested cabinet permission to call up 10,000 reservists for combat and home front duty.

Hamas chief Khaled Meshal is expected to leave for Cairo tomorrow to meet with Egyptian officials and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Meshal said in an interview to the Turkish Andalou News Agency that Hamas would keep fighting until Israel meets its terms for a permanent truce. He also accused Israel of interpenetrating a “holocaust” in Gaza and of “replicating what Hitler did years ago.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement on the Rafah assassination, thanking the Shin Bet for its “hard work and professionalism.” The defense minister asked the public for patience and fortitude, saying “the operation will be long and the goal is one: to return quiet and security to the people of Israel in general and the residents of the south in particular. We will not compromise.”
