Colombian tribe suffers despite profits from handmade bags

Global Business

Handmade bags produced by female members of the Colombian indigenous tribe Wayuu are the primary source of income for the tribe. They have also become a fashion trend around the world.

Wayuu women sell their bags to tourists, local retailers and abroad. Prices range from $10 to $150 per bag.

Despite the flourishing business, the Wayuu live in fatal poverty. Corrupt local leaders and the Colombian central government have had minimal presence in their region.

As the current drought is likely to intensify later this year, there are fears that the Wayuu region is set to suffer even more. CCTV’s Toby Muse reports.
