Beijing has denied allegations by Washington that a Chinese fighter jet flew dangerously close to a U.S. surveillance plane off China’s southern coast, about 220 kilometers (137 miles) east of China’s Hainan Island. CCTV America’s Nathan King reports.

The Pentagon and the White House said one of their P8 Poseidon Surveillance aircraft was “buzzed” by a Chinese SU 27 jet. Beijing responded in a statement Saturday. The Chinese Defense Ministry said U.S. complaints were “totally groundless.” The China Fighter took off to identify and verify, they said, and the Chinese pilot kept the jet within a safe distance from the U.S. aircraft.

The Chinese Defense Ministry also said that the U.S. should stop close-in surveillance of China.
