Deng Xiaoping has been called the architect of China’s reform. Under his direction, Shenzhen became the first Special Economic Zone in China and quickly became the factory of the world. Now more than 30 years later, the city’s residents reflect on his legacy. CCTV America’s Wu Lei reports from Shenzhen.

Shenzhen is now one of China’s most developed cities. The per capital GDP ranks first among China’s major cities. Only 35 years ago, it was only a group of fishing villages.

During Deng Xiaoping’s first tour to Shenzhen in 1984, he paid a visit to Fishermen’s Village. The former village head Deng Zhibiao received him. Now in his 70s, he still remembers clearly that Deng was very pleased to see the results of the reform.

Fishermen’s Village has changed beyond recognition. Satisfied villagers credit the policy. While the older generation has witnessed the changes in Shenzhen, the younger generation is writing its own history.

For the growing number of millions of people, this metropolis is a land of opportunities. These young workers say they will keep Deng’s legacy in mind as they build their lives here.

Shenzhen’s success shows the importance of reform policy to modern China. Many residents say that the best way to commemorate Deng Xiaoping is to stick to reform and innovation, so that the younger generation can continue to pursue their dreams in an open and fair environment.
