New markets for mountain bikes emerge in China

Global Business

China is a country long-known for manufacturing bicycles. Two out of every three bikes produced worldwide are made in China. China is also becoming a place where bikes, often high-end machines, are being sold too. CCTV America’s Hendrik Sybrandy reports.

For a week in August, some of the world’s top cyclists packed the streets and roads of the U.S. state of Colorado. The USA Pro Challenge bike race just finished its fourth year.

Competitive cycling has become a global endeavor. The race calendar takes these athletes all over the world. The Tour of Beijing in October and the Tour of Qinghai Lake held in July are two of China’s most popular races.

Chris Conroy of Yeti Cycles said a more affluent, recreationally-oriented population has helped boost sales of his mountain bikes 71 percent a year in China over the past three years.

Like some other relatively new international cycling markets, China is heading in the right direction.
