Chinese lawmakers tackle threat of espionage

The 12th National People’s Congress Standing Committee is continuing its tenth meeting in Beijing. The seven-day session will focus on legal issues including draft amendments to a number of laws and regulations.

On Saturday, lawmakers discussed renaming the National Security Law, which may be amended with more provisions to combat espionage. CCTV’s Hou Na reports.

A bill submitted for a first reading at the bi-monthly session of the China’s NPC Standing Committee suggests changing the name of the National Security Law to the Counter-espionage Law.

The current law mainly regulates the work of the country’s national security agencies, whose major duty is counter-espionage work.

The bill will be put to vote at the end of the session on Sunday.
