‘Rape of Nanking’ brings to light a violent massacre

World Today

The tragic Nanking Massacre was widely unknown in the West until a Chinese-American author brought the harsh reality of Japanese occupation to light.

The Nanking Massacre was a dark time in Chinese history, when Japanese troops slaughtered hundreds of thousands of Chinese and raped tens of thousands of women in just six weeks. Author Iris Chang was inspired to tell the story of Nanking by stories about her grandparents who escaped Nanking one month before the massacres began.

Chang wrote the book The Rape of Nanking, which exposes the diaries of Westerners who witnessed the carnage in Nanking, but also managed to save tens of thousands of Chinese people. CCTV America’s Mark Niu reports.
