In one week’s operation, Somali and African union troops advanced and got closer to the sea side town of Barawe, which is one of the remaining strongholds of al-Shabab. In the same week, the group lost its ultimate leader to an American drone strike.
Somali authorities sensed a weakness in the group which they seek to exploit. Somali government has offered amnesty to the al-Shabab fighters who surrender.
