Alibaba finds success in Russia

Global Business

According to market research firm TNS, AliExpress, an Alibaba site for users outside China, the number of monthly visitors in Russia has tripled over the past year to become the country’s No. 1 shopping site.

With 15.9 million users, it’s nearly twice as popular as Russian competitor Ozon, which has 8.5 million users or the U.S.-based eBay, which has 8.2 million users.

Moscow-based research company Data Insight said that the average AliExpress order in Russia is about $25, and that around 60,000 packages a day were shipped to Russia last year.

AliExpress doubled its revenue growth last fiscal year to about $150 million, with growth driven by Russia, Brazil and the U.S.

Analysts SimilarWeb said Russia makes up 15 percent of AliExpress’ audience. However, competition is fierce as the market grows. According to research company Data Insight, e-commerce revenue in Russia grew 28 percent last year to $16.3 billion and may grow as much as 33 percent this year.

There’s also talk that Alibaba may open its own Russia office, sometime after the U.S. IPO launch. CCTV America’s Tom Barton reports from Moscow.
