Rise in kidnap cases sparks fears in Chinese-Filipino community

A recent spate of kidnapping incidents is sending shivers throughout the Chinese-Filipino community. Anti-crime advocates are urging police to step up efforts to ensure the safety of the public, but police officers may themselves be involved in at least one case. CCTV America’s Barnaby Lo reports.

These days, there are two prevailing sentiments every time when schoolchildren in Manila head back home: excitement among the children, and fear among parents. That’s because kidnap for ransom, which is so prevalent in the 90’s, is perceived to be on the rise.

The Movement for the Restoration of Peace and Order (MRPO) says there have been seven reported cases in just the last two months, and there could be more. Most of the victims are Chinese-Filipino.
