Flood victims awaiting assistance in Pakistan

World Today

The waters are continuing to inundate villages and towns in Pakistan and India as well. As CCTV America’s Danial Khan reports from the border town of Ghotki, efforts to control the damage by blowing up dikes have endangered many communities downstream.

Authorities are facing growing anger over their response to Pakistan’s worst flooding since 2010. The provincial disaster management authority says, 6,000 tents have been dispatched to give shelter to those displaced from their homes. But on the ground, the picture remains grim. Suddenly homeless women, children and elderly remain vulnerable to disease.

In total, nearly 300,000 people have been evacuated from the flood-hit areas to over 200 relief camps set up by the army. Experts fear a delay in government action may contribute to an outbreak of water-borne disease, similar to what happened after the 2010 floods. 1700 people in all died in that disaster.
