Costa Rican minister advocates for women’s equality

Many Latin American countries have traditionally placed the needs of men higher than those of women. To combat this, Costa Rica has created a Ministry of Women’s Issues. This ministry’s goal is to provide a strategic political boost for women in Costa Rican politics while making sure that issues that affect women are weighed equally with those of men.

Costa Rican Minster of Women’s Issues Alejandra Mora is a veteran of the political ring. She fights for women’s equality in Costa Rica, but also for women around the world. “Women issues are not exclusive of a region, but are Universal,” she says.

The minister sits down with Americas Now’s Elaine Reyes to discuss how women are slowly gaining political power, how poverty and domestic violence affect women and what is required for the advancement of women in Costa Rica’s future.
