US Colleges under scanner for overlooking sexual assault complaints

As U.S college students head back to school, there are new questions about the possibility of a ‘sexual assault crisis’ on the nation’s college campuses. For the first time, nearly 80 schools, all across the country, are under federal investigation for how they handle claims of sexual violence. What do colleges need to do to protect women?

Some studies estimate almost 14 percent of female undergraduate students are sexually assaulted while attending school. Certain U.S colleges and universities are under federal investigation because questions are being raised on how they handle complaints of sexual violence on campus. As college students start a new school year, what do these institutions need to do to protect their students?

Sexual assault on campus is an issue that has gained unprecedented political momentum in the U.S and sparked a national conversation.California is the first U.S state to pass a so-called “yes-means-yes” bill. It changes the definition of sexual consent in the state’s public universities. While critics aren’t sold on the new law, some advocates say this is the first step in combating a sexual assault problem plaguing U.S higher education campuses.

CCTV America’s Anand Naidoo is Joined by Dana Bolger co-founder of an organization called ‘Know Your Nine’and Faith Walker from New York. Both these young women are survivors of sexual assault on campus.
