Human rights abuse victims join FARC peace talks

Cuba

Colombia has chosen 60 victims of human rights abuses to participate in the peace negotiations with the guerrilla group FARC in Havana.

For decades, the FARC and the Colombian government denied allegations of human rights abuses and blamed each other for deaths and displacements. At least 220,000 people have died and 3 million have been displaced during the 50 years of conflict.

In Cuba last month, each of the first 12 victims read their testimonies behind a closed door meeting with the guerilla group and Colombian government negotiators.

Sixty victims total will take part in this historical moment in Colombian history, where forgiveness seems to be a little more than just a dream.
