Iraqi ambassador to Britain request military help

The Iraqi government requested military help in its fight against the Islamic State (IS) militants from both the U.S. and the UK back in June of this year, the Iraqi ambassador to Britain Faik Nerweyi said on Wednesday.

Speaking to the British broadcaster Sky news, Nerweyi said the “military help would be very urgent to get rid of ISIS.”

“I do understand that the military operation is only one side. But to take them out and make sure that they wouldn’t come back, we need quite much help,” Nerweyi said ahead of an address to the United Nations by the British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Nerweyi also confirmed that emphasizing on Iraq’s need for further help against the Islamic State group will be a part of Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s discussion with David Cameron when they meet later today.

Cameron is expected to announce an increase in the UK’s military involvement in the struggle against the IS. The U.S. and its allies have been carrying out airstrikes in Iraq for weeks.
