Alibaba targets Brazilian growth as AliExpress trails rivals eBay, Amazon

During the run-up to Alibaba’s IPO, founder Jack Ma told investors that Brazil will an important part of its global expansion. The online marketplace AliExpress will be targeting Brazilian customers. CCTV America’s Paulo Cabral reports from Sao Paulo.

Over the last 10 years, Brazil’s trade with China has grown more than tenfold. Chinese products are everywhere in the country and Brazilians have gotten used to buying them, which has been good for AliExpress. Its Portuguese language website in Brazil had 12 million visitors in July- triple the number of visitors to eBay.

Globally, AliExpress sold more than $4.5 billion in Chinese products from June 2013 to June 2014. In Brazil, one survey suggests AliExpress is the third most preferred website, not far behind much longer established E-Bay at 27 percent and Amazon at 25 percent.
