Dozens killed and wounded in Donetsk school attack

Tragedy strikes at the start of the Donetsk school year. This comes amid concern that the ceasefire in eastern Ukraine has been showing signs of breaking down. CCTV America’s Stephanie Freid reports.

This was the welcome back at the start of Donetsk city’s school year in Donetsk: a school playground hit by shelling. Nearby, a civilian bus also hit at about the same time.

The combined death toll from the two incidents: at least a dozen and dozens of others wounded.

An official truce agreed upon by the two sides should have put an end to that weeks ago. However, during the past week battling has intensified threatening to break apart any remnants of a ceasefire in Eastern Ukraine.

Both sides are blaming each other for Wednesday’s carnage. The one thing that seems clear: Reassurances from Ukraine’s president Petro Poroshenko that “the worst of the East’s fighting is over” are not at all reassuring to the people of Donetsk.
