The Heat explores how European nations address migrants

The Heat

Thousands of immigrants from conflict-ridden areas such as North Africa and the Middle East take their chances aboard dangerous boats in hopes of reaching a new life in Europe. More than 3,000 have died in such attempts this year. The Heat takes a look at the growing humanitarian crisis.

Over the past two decades, 20,000 people from these countries have died on boats operated by smugglers. About 100,000 migrants have been rescued so far, but the numbers are steadily increasing as conflicts continue to rage in Syria, Gaza and Libya. CCTV America’s John Gilmore reports.

Leonard Doyle, a spokesman for the International Organization for Migration, joined The Heat to discuss the crisis from Geneva. Follow Leonard Doyle on Twitter @LeonardDoyle

Fabrizio Gatti, an award-winning journalist from Italy who has reported extensively on migrants spoke with The Heat from Milan.

European Law expert Jorrit Rijpma from Amsterdam shared more insight on the rights of immigrants once they arrive in Europe.
