New motorcycle helmet offers rearview camera, GPS

Global Business

Smart technology has become so common in the auto world that many car companies are now also technology companies. One such company is focusing on the underserved market of motorcycle drivers. CCTV America’s Mark Niu reports.

The Skully AR-1 smart helmet provides a display with a 180-degree rearview camera essentially eliminating all blind spots.

A small display tells the motorcyclist how much gas is left in the tank, as well as what gear the driver is in and what gear the driver should be in to be more efficient. Most importantly, the motorcyclist no longer has to look forward, at the mirror and over the shoulder to change lanes. The driver only needs to glance down.

This is especially important considering a finding by the Centers for Disease Control that between 1999-2008, motorcycle deaths in the United States more than doubled, reaching an all-time high.

Skully will be rolling out voice command features over time, and it currently offers GPS input through a mobile app. The helmet locks drivers out, however, if they try to use their smartphone while moving. The idea is to eliminate distractions.
