Some Philippine Muslims pledge support to ISIL

Islamic Extremism

About 100 men gathered last month in a mosque in the predominantly Muslim city of Marawi, not only to worship, but to pledge their support for the Islamic State or IS. CCTV’s Barnaby Lo reports from Marawi City.

How much danger ISIL actually poses to the Philippines isn’t clear at this point, but the government hopes that by signing a peace agreement with the country’s largest Muslim separatist movement, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, earlier this year, and by putting in place a new autonomous government in the Southern Philippines, they can address long-held grievances and stem violent extremism.
