Argentine middle class struggles as World Bank reports high poverty risks

Argentina has historically had one of the largest middle classes in Latin America, but younger generations are increasingly facing difficulties in the current economic climate. CCTV America’s Joel Richards reports.

A recent report by the World Bank looked at whether the advances in reducing poverty in Argentina over the past decade may be reversed because of high inflation.

The report found that Argentina is one of the top two countries in the region when it comes to poverty reduction over the past decade. Even so, the report also suggests that a third of the population is vulnerable of falling into poverty.

Argentina’s finance minister this week criticized the IMF’s prediction that his country’s economy will shrink in 2014, saying the organization’s forecasts for Argentina have been off for the past decade.

Property is priced in dollars in Argentina, as the market historically looks to protect itself in a fluctuating economy.

Income inequality has become a well worn phrase in the past few years. Movements like Occupy Wall Street put the spotlight on the growing gap between the richest and poorest around the world. Owen Fairclough interviewed economist Branko Milanovic, author of the book “The Haves and Have Not” about how income inequality has narrowed then widened in the past 30 years.
