A artistic installation at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., appeared as simple landscaping at ground level. But from above, it revealed the face of a young man. Called “Out of Many, One,” the piece by Cuban-American artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada was on desplay in October on the lawn just west of the National World War II Memorial.

The exhibit takes up six acres and is large enough to be seen by imaging satellites in space. At ground level, visitors can walk through the exhibit and see portraits of various people who live in the nation’s capital. Rodrigues-Gerada spoke Americas Now to discuss his new project which confronts the concept of identity and celebrates diversity.
