The Heat

On January 12, 2010, a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the small Caribbean nation of Haiti, killing more than 200,000 people and leaving more than one million homeless. The international community responded to the humanitarian disaster with billions in aid. Now, almost five years later, some progress has been made, but could much more have been accomplished to help Haiti get back on its feet? CCTV America’s John Gilmore reports.

For more on rebuilding efforts in Haiti, The Heat interviewed Vania Andre, the editor-in-chief of the Haitian Times.

The Heat also spoke to Jonathan Katz, an author and former Associated Press correspondent who was based in Haiti when the earthquake hit. On Twitter: @KatzOnEarth.

In addition to recovering from the earthquake, Haiti has also had to deal with a cholera outbreak. CCTV America’s Gerry Hadden reports.

Joining the panel on is the Caribbean Correspondent for the Miami Herald, Jacqueline Charles, who has just returned from Haiti. On Twitter: @Jacquiecharles. The Heat also interviewed Melinda Miles, who has spent the last 16 years working with humanitarian groups in Haiti. On Twitter: @melindayiti.
