Sneak peek of CCTV America’s exclusive interview with Cuba’s Elian Gonzalez

Cuba

Some may recall the emotional, international custody battle over 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez in 2000. It was one of the most painful incidents in a troubled history between Cuba and the United States. Fourteen years after that event, Elian Gonzalez sat down for an exclusive interview with CCTV America’s Michael Voss.

The fate Gonzalez erupted into one of the most divisive international custody battles ever seen. His father wanted to bring him back to Cuba, but his relatives in Miami refused to give him up.

Millions around the world watched in April of 2000 as armed U.S. federal agents stormed the house to take Elian Gonzalez away.

Gonzalez is now 20. In a rare and exclusive interview,  he told CCTV America about his memories of those fateful days in Miami.

“The little that I can recall, those moments were not happy ones, until I saw my father. Those are dark moments I try not to remember. It was a senseless act, an unfair act to separate a father from his son, because that was not a political issue, it was a family issue. A father wanted to be with his son. That child had lost his mother and had no other choice.” – Elian Gonzalez

Watch Michael Voss’ full interview with Elian Gonzalez, including more on his relationship with Fidel Castro, on Sunday, Oct. 26 on CCTV America’s weekly magazine program Americas Now.
