Ethiopian agriculture rises to 43 percent of GDP

Ethiopia’s agricultural output in 2014 is expected to rise partly due to policy changes made by the government. CCTV America’s Girum Chala reports.

Exactly 30 years ago Ethiopia was painfully food insecure after experiencing the worst famine in the history of the nation.

Today, however, the situation is dramatically different. Agriculture contributes to about 43 percent to Ethiopia’s GDP, moving it beyond food insecurity.

It is now the harvest season for the Ethiopian farmers. Across the country staples such sorghum, wheat, barley, maize, and the grain teff are expected double in output compared to last year. Many farmers said they are convinced this year will be another successful year.
