New data shows that in China, coffee consumption is growing seven times faster than the global average, boosting the business of coffee companies, big and small.

China may traditionally be a tea-drinking nation. But increasingly, it is craving coffee. According to the China Coffee Association Beijing, China’s coffee consumption is growing by 15 percent every year, compared to two percent globally.

According to Nestle, a world famous Swiss multinational food and beverage company, China’s per-capita coffee consumption is only about five cups a year per person. That is compared to 300 cups a year in Japan. But China is catching up fast.

Growth in China is boosting sales at Nestle, now a market leader in the country. Its high-end Espresso range is quickly expanding in China, driven by urbanization and tourism.
