Moscow to recognize results of breakaway election in eastern Ukraine

World Today

Partial results in eastern Ukraine’s election indicate victory for the self-declared leaders of the breakaway republics. The European Union has described the controversial vote as illegal, and the Ukrainian president branded it a farce.

Six months after pro-Russia rebels in eastern Ukraine held a referendum and declared independence from Kiev, people cast their votes once more to elect new leaders and parliaments for the two breakaway states. Hundreds of displaced people from the conflict-torn eastern region protested against the elections in Kiev.

Despite wide international disapproval for the elections, Moscow has said it will recognize the result which further deepens the divide between Russia and the West.
