Chile’s Antarctic military base has extreme southern exposure

Americas Now

The inhabitants of Villa Las Estrellas have created a tight-knit community in this southernmost corner of the planet.

The land claimed by Chile in Antarctica is so far from the equator that temperatures regularly drop to -40 degrees Celsius.

In 1984 the Chilean government put a military base at this remote point and many of the 64 people who live there are the families of these government workers. They brave the cold, wind, and snow, and try to live as normal a life as possible in the frozen tundra.

Travel with Americas Now to this base to see this beautiful, unforgiving environment, and meet the people who inhabit it.
