Corinne Winters is the star of Washington National Opera’s “La Bohème,” the masterpiece by Italian composer Puccini, now playing at The Kennedy Center. Winters also just released an album titled “Songs of Spain,” in which she sings in four different Spanish dialects. And she has performed in a Mandarin production in which she sings her role in Chinese. Americas Now anchor Elaine Reyes interviewed Winters about her high-octave life.

“La Bohème” takes place in Paris’ bohemian Latin Quarter, an area made famous by writers in the 1920s like Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Gertrude Stein. In the Washington National Opera version, Winters plays Mimi, a seamstress who falls in love with a poet named Rodolfo. The result of their union? Some of the most tender and touching operatic arias to be heard on stage.

Winters’ album is a collaboration with pianist Steven Blier, and has even drawn praise from celebrated Spanish tenor Placido Domingo.

“I have great love and respect for Corinne Winter’s voice, such a charismatic, opulent sound. She and pianist Steven Blier do honor to the songs of my country,” Domingo said. “This CD celebrates the glory of Spain.”
