“Tango Lovers,” tour creates sensation in US

Buenos Aires has long been regarded as the place that gave birth to the intimate dance the Tango. But Argentina’s neighbor Uruguay has a history of its own with this dance of romance.

In fact, that’s where many of the most popular Tango songs originated. So it should be no surprise that when both countries joined forces to create a dance troupe, the result would be a smashing success. It’s called “Tango Lovers,” and the group was recently named the World Tango Dance Champions.

Although the first Tango music was written in the 1890’s, it wasn’t until the mid-1930’s that the dance entered its golden age and became one of the most loved “couples” dances in the world.

“Tango Lovers” combines that same traditional Tango dancing from the 1930’s to the 1950’s, with the more contemporary choreography of today.

Americas Now recently went toe-to-toe with these Tango masters as they traveled the Americas on their 2014 tour. Featuring interviews with Alfredo Lerida, the group’s singer and founder, musical director Gustavo Casenave and artistic director and first dancer Marcos Ayala. We take a whirl with South America’s top Tango troupe.
