Snow sweeps north China, disrupts traffic

World Today

Snow that started early this week has swept the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in north China, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and Qinghai Province in the northwest, disrupting traffic and affecting local agriculture.

Snow brought by a cold wave hit northeastern Inner Mongolia Wednesday. Snow blown by strong gales reduced visibility to less than 100 meters (0.06 miles). Local temperatures dropped by 12 degrees Celsius (53.6 Fahrenheit) to minus 25 degrees Celsius (-13 Fahrenheit).

Snow started on Thursday morning swept the northeastern part of Qinghai Province.

Traffic was seen moving slowly on thick snow-covered roads in the provincial capital of Xi’ning.

Some cargo vehicles used snow chains to avoid risks posed by the adverse weather.

Vehicles drove at limited speed on expressways in the affected areas and passenger bus services were partly suspended.

Snow that started on Tuesday troubled agricultural production and animal husbandry in Xinjiang.
