Celebrations are underway in Uruguay following Tabare Vazquez’s win in the country’s presidential election on Sunday. The victory marks Vazquez’s third term as president for the center-left Broad Front coalition.

Vazquez, a 74-year-old doctor, served as the country’s first leftist president between 2005-2010. Unofficial exit polls showed that Vazquez took one of the largest majorities in Uruguayan electoral history over the National Party candidate, Luis Lacalle Pou.

Vazquez will take office in March 2015, succeeding current President Jose Mujica, who became well known for his progressive social policies. Mujica took over from Vazquez in 2010.

The two leaders have different styles and differing opinions on controversial issues such as marijuana legalization. However, Mujica told CCTV before the elections that there would be continuity.

Both Vazquez and Mujica led the country with high approval ratings, helping the Broad Front coalition establish itself as a dominant force in Uruguayan politics.
