Political analyst Laura Carlsen on the fate of climate talks in Peru

Americas Now

America’s now interviewed political analyst Laura Carlsen about the Climate Conference in Peru and potential roadblocks to reaching a global agreement.

Carlsen said the recent announcement of China and the U.S. promising to cut emissions in the decades ahead is positive news likely to spur other countries to follow suit.

However, the larger hurdle of coming to an accord involve powerful transnational corporations. The constant quest of these business behemoths to turn a quick profit — regardless of the environmental consequences — runs contrary to the long-term solutions being discussed at the conference, she said.

Carlsen also said it was significant to note the nations that were not attending the Peru Climate Talks.
