Thailand’s King Bhumipol Adulyadej celebrated his 87th birthday on Sunday and celebrations were held across the kingdom. Tony Cheng reported this story from Bangkok.

Bhumipol, the longest reigning monarch in the world, was recently hospitalized and ongoing concerns about his health have made many Thais increasingly aware of his frailty.

He had been scheduled to make a public appearance with the rest of the royal family at the grand palace, but was unable to do so. He remains under constant care inside Siriraj hospital where he as been for the past two months.

After watching growing political divisions in Thailand that resulted in a coup earlier this year, the king remains one of the few unifying forces in the country.

Nonetheless those who had flocked to see him were not disappointed.

“It doesn’t matter whether he is appearing in front of a public audience or not. I’m just happy that I am here to show my loyalty to him. I’m happy no matter where he is,” said Thepwitoon Chim-Ngog, 37.
