Panda dies from respiratory, renal failure in Sichuan

A giant panda that was found dead at a panda research center in southwest China’s Sichuan Province is believed to have died from respiratory and renal failure, veterinary experts at the center said on Sunday.

Xin Yuan was undergoing training at the China Research and Conservation Center for the Giant Panda in preparation for her release into the wild. Workers at the center first noticed her disappearance on Nov. 18, and keepers found her body two days later.

Since she was being prepared for release, the panda’s monitoring collar was not programmed to relay information about the animal’s health.

It is believed that she died on Nov. 19. Her body is still being examined.

Xin Yuan’s mother Long Xin, who was suffering as a result of her grief, has recovered and is now in good condition.

Staff at the center said they would continue preparing pandas for release into the wild despite Xin Yuan’s death.
