Peru is one of the lowest carbon dioxide emitters in the Americas, yet it’s ranked among the top three countries worldwide that will be most affected by climate change.

In this Amazon nation, unlike in more industrialized ones, deforestation had been the principal cause of its carbon emissions. International programs like REDD have been making it economically viable to keep trees standing even within a forestry concession.

There has been an increasing body of evidence that shows a strong link between indigenous peoples and the protection of forests, just as the need to preserve them is more urgent than ever.

“They’re proven to be better protectors of that forest than the government or private users,” Andy White of the Right and Resources Institute said.

Now, Peru is working with businesses in an effort to change their mindset so they realize the benefits of reducing their carbon emissions.
