Americas Now

From guerrilla member to tortured prisoner under Uruguay’s brutal dictatorship to president of Uruguay, it has been quite a journey for Jose Mujica. Celebrated and esteemed worldwide, he is getting ready for yet another rite of passage, as he will be stepping down from the presidency by the end of March, 2015.

In a way, it won’t make such a big difference for this unique dignitary, who refused to move quarters to the presidential palace from his humble ‘chacra’ (small ranch) when he was sworn-in, and has kept his beaten down Volkswagen Beetle as his preferred means of transport, instead of the official caravan presidents usually ride in.

Mujica welcomed Americas Now’s correspondent Joel Richards into his home on the outskirts of Montevideo for a last interview before leaving office. He recalled highlights of his term, discussed the future of the reforms he put forward and reflected on his legacy.
