It was a deal 18 months in the making between two countries less than 100 miles apart but burdened with 50 years of estrangement that seemed to be set in stone.

The agreement agreement to renew ties was sealed with a 45-minute phone conversation between the leaders of Cuba and the U.S, the first communication of this sort since 1961.

In their simultaneous announcements, both presidents told their respective nations that they would normalize ties.

The rapprochement was signal that while some structures from the Cold War era remain well into the 21st Century, the world continues to change and evolve.
