Wednesday was a sleepless night for hundreds of physicians and nurses at Changzheng Hospital in Shanghai where most of the injured from the Shanghai stampede were treated. CCTV News reporter Li Qiong covered this story from Shanghai.

Changzheng physician Shi Xiaolei was part of the massive crowd at the Bund with his colleagues after a day’s work at the hospital on New Year’s Eve. After learning about the stampede, he quickly made his way to aid those hurt.

“I knew that I should be there without any hesitation,” Shi said. “Some and my colleagues got to the scene and told police we were doctors. They let us in.”

Shi and his colleagues conducted a preliminary diagnosis on the injured and began emergency treatment. As they made their way to the hospital, Shi and his colleagues took turns administering CPR and notifying the hospital to prepare the emergency rooms.

The first injured arrived at 12:15 am. After a quick hand-over to hospital personnel, Shi returned to his post in the radiology room.

“I saw many injured people arriving in the ER,” Shi said. “Because they were wounded in the stampede, I knew that scanning for fractures or visceral bleeding would be crucial for their diagnosis. I went back to my office and started to examine the patients with my colleagues.”

A total of 28 injured people were sent to Changzheng hospital within three hours Wednesday night. Shi kept busy conducting CT scans of the injured and did not finish until the morning. Over a hundred doctors and nurses worked through the night.

“For medical staff, the only thing that matters is saving people’s lives,” Changzheng nurse Yan Dongfang said. “No matter what time it is and how long it takes.”

All of injured are in stable condition.
