Sony, Samsung debut new products at CES

Two of the biggest presentations at the annual Consumer Electronics Show convention are by Samsung and Sony, though other players are attempting to crash the party. CCTV America’s Mark Niu reported this story from Las Vegas.

Sony showed off the convention’s biggest booth and largest product line with an awkward moment by discussing the recent cyber attack of it’s movie, “The Interview“.

“I am very proud of all the employees and certainly the partners that we worked with who stood up against some of the extortionists efforts. And I have to say that freedom of speech, freedom of expression and freedom of association, those are very important lifelines of Sony and our entertainment business,” Sony President and CEO Kazuo Hirai said.

Sony attempted to spin the incident into a selling point, stressing all the creative freedom that could be expressed through use of its new product line.

The company released this year’s 4K handycam, which has 4 times full high-definition resolution. The video camera is also 30 percent smaller, 20 percent lighter, and 50 percent cheaper than last year’s model, selling for $1,000.

The company also brought out skateboarding icon Tony Hawk to introduce the 4K Action Cam, which has the potential to give GoPro a run for its money.

But the star of Sony’s show was the X900C Ultra HD TV, which the company said is able to upgrade any video source to maximum quality. The TV is only two-tenths of an inch thick, thinner than Sony’s own Xperia smartphone.

Samsung also had a big show, introducing new smart TVs that will run Tizen, an operating system that’s been under development for years.

But Chinese company TCL, the world’s number four LCD maker also unveiled its 4K TV using Quantum Dot technology.

TCL claims most mainstream LCD TV designs delivers 60-70 percent true color, while Quantum Dot technology allows for 110 percent.
