Star gazers captured awe-inspiring images of Comet Lovejoy in the sky above the Changbai Mountain range in northeast China’s Jilin Province on Monday.

Far away from the light pollution of China’s cities, astronomy enthusiasts captured the comet with time-lapse photography from 4 p.m. on Jan. 12 local time to 7 a.m. on Jan. 13.

Comet Lovejoy was closest to earth, and brightest, one week ago. Now, it’s growing fainter, but it can still be seen through binoculars and telescopes.

Australian amateur astronomer Terry Lovejoy first discovered the comet in August 2014.
