An ethnic minority group in southwest China held traditional buffalo fights as part of a celebration of the local lunar new year, which fell on Jan. 13.

Members of the Buyi ethnic group in Sandu County of Guizhou Province arrived early to the competition for a chance to get a better view, while others climbed to hillsides or housetops.

Buffalo fighting is popular among people of Buyi and Miao ethnic groups in Qiannan Autonomous Prefecture. Enthusiasts from outside the region also came to watch.

“I can feel the strong festive atmosphere here. The buffalo fights are exciting,” a tourist said.
